With two healthy pregnancies under my belt, I felt that something wasn’t right with my third child, Elliott. Up until he was 18 months, I felt he couldn’t hear and still wasn’t talking.
For months, I heard repeated assurances from the pediatricians that he’s fine, citing reasons like “because he’s just a boy” or that “he has two older sisters who talk for him.” Finally, at his 18-month checkup, I found out why. They told us that Elliott would need to undergo testing by the state for their 0-3 program because there was a problem. I didn’t know much about that program, but I remember the moment vividly — not wanting to believe what they were saying and reminding myself to breath, just breath.
